Bihari Arhar Dal (Toor Dal with Masoor Twist)

🥕 Ingredients

🍲 For the Dal

  • Arhar (Toor) dal – ¾ cup
  • Masoor dal – ¼ cup
  • Water – 3–4 cups
  • Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
  • Salt – to taste

🌶 For the Tadka

  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds (jeera) – 1 tsp
  • Onion – 1 large, finely chopped
  • Red chilli powder – 1 tsp

🌿 For Garnish

  • Green chillies – 2, slit
  • Fresh coriander – chopped

🍳 Method

1️⃣ Pressure Cook the Dal

Wash both dals thoroughly.

In a pressure cooker, add dal, water, turmeric, and salt.

Cook for 3 whistles on medium flame until soft and mushy.


2️⃣ Prepare the Onion Base

Heat oil in a kadai.

Add chopped onions and sauté on medium-low heat until golden brown.


3️⃣ Add the Tempering

Add cumin seeds and let them crackle.

Turn off the heat and add red chilli powder.


4️⃣ Combine

Pour the prepared tadka over the cooked dal.

Mix well to combine flavors.


5️⃣ Garnish and Serve

Top with slit green chillies and fresh coriander.

Serve hot with rice or roti.

  • Soak dal for 20 minutes for faster cooking and better digestion
  • Add a pinch of hing in tadka for enhanced flavor and gut health
  • Use hot water to adjust consistency if dal thickens
